So when I was reading my daily run of blogs I stumbled upon my girl, Chocolate Covered Katie, and low and behold she is giving away a VITAMIX BLENDER!! Drooool. I hate that I'm even telling you this, but if you want a chance to win this miracle of modern science please click on the link below.

http://chocolatecoveredkatie.com/2010/01/16/vitameata-vita-mix-giveaway/

But don't stop there! If this is your first time scratching the cake bowl's surface, which is Chocolate covered Katie's site, dig a little deeper. You will be amazed at the scrum-didli-ocious recipes she has. Hug the right!" I tapped a rubber tube hanging from a truck and came within two inches of hitting the truck itself. Since we had decided not to get the extended insurance I was no longer allowed to drive.

Ian then took us to see the Cliffs of Moher, amazing sea cliffs amidst the backdrop of the Burren.

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); His house was a 25 acre house that was cut up into allotments, which are spaces of farm land that can be rented out to people for a small fee.
This is a trend that is becoming increasingly popular during the recession. The farm use to be run by the mom, but after her passing six years ago the place hadn't been touched. The place was in complete disrepair. When we arrived Mark informed us that we would not be sleeping in the house, but rather in the barn that was renovated into a luxury apartment.
Even Mark was jealous of the living arrangement, he seemed like he would have been happy to switch us for the house. No deal. Work arrangement was lax in comparison to our previous farm. We took to undoing six years of farm neglect. This included fighting through thorn woven brambles and braving thick patches of stinging nettle. During our breaks Katy and I would pick through the sea side orchard and rummage through the gardens for our salads.
A short walk from the farm would bring us to Ireland's most southern coast. Rocks stuck out like razor blades amongst an angry surf, as the mist from the sea kept alive outbreaks of green, orange, and purple algae. On one weekend Katy and I went to a Folk Festival, which consisted of two tents, one where a 10 yr. old girl sold her most prized possessions with a frown and another where a man stood alone with his guitar and an entranced boy.

We decided to walk along the coast from the festival back. This proved to be more time consuming and challenging than we thought. The serrated edged of the coast made for a grueling trek. Along the way we found abandoned buildings, families fishing, huge scraps of metal, and incredible scenery.

We abandoned the coast line for higher ground and ran right into an abandoned church that was overgrown with vegetation and had a graveyard that was littered with statued tombstones.

There was another "woofer" who stayed with us, Natalie from Kaui, a true American hippy. She was made famous with her luxurious armpit hair and seemed to flaunt it in everyones faces. Different folk different stroke. She was an artist whose best friend was Bethany Hamilton, the girl surfer who had her arm bit off by a tiger shark in Hawaii and her Mom was the creator/owner of redline wetsuits. She was infatuated with mermaids and had even toted her harp with her, which she played every morning. She ended her stay by giving Katy some dresses, Katy politely refused due to the immense size of the pit stains.

The orchard also kept two horses and a fat pony named Jack.

Unfortunately the six years of farm neglect fell upon the livestock as well as the landscape. Jack was barely mobile due to the state of her hooves being so overgrown that blood vessels now ran thick where her original hoof size should be.

Mark proved to be an incredible host and nothing more could have been asked. They're basically Ireland's version of the sandal. They are way off.

<img src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_3-wM8cuT2tw/SoCGyhAZ0WI/AAAAAAAAAMc/lBqgA1GJ-eg/s400/P1000582.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5368438958237274466" style="display: block; Indian mussel soup, gooseberry consomme, chocolate mousse and meats and cheeses from the Ballymaloe Cookery animals.
Rupert, the husband on our farm was hostile to us from the first day we arrived. He seemed to enjoy the fact that he had figured out how to get free labor but was annoyed that we were still

there at the end of the work day. One of our projects was laying hardcore and gravel around his house and driveway with small buckets. He and Lydia used their connections at Ballymaloe

Cookery to sell the Cookery school's surplus vegetables as their own. In fact, Rupert's own farm had not grown anything but a few heads of lettuce. They also sold Ballymaloe Jams, Relishes, and Salad Dressings as their own, without the label. Customers at the Farmer's Market would constantly ask us if the products were from Ballymaloe.

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 238); We spent our days hiking against the sea cliffs and looking for chances to jump in the water. There were so many spots along the cliffs where you could stop for lunch and be completely by yourself amid unbelievable scenery.
On one hike we found the Guillameine Swimming Cove.
Ouch!! We wasted no time jumping in and no time jumping out because I didn't know water could get that cold!

On our last night in Tramore we wandered over to the amusement park that was set up on the beach. Here Katy tried to conquer her fear of heights with little success. We are here in Ireland! We arrived in the the country at half 7 (thats irish for 730) and found our way to the bus stop somehow as we were operating on no sleep. We took a quick bus ride to the Ireland's westerly gaelic capital, Galway. We stayed in the Claddagh Hostel where the dorm rooms were more than cramped. I imagine there would be bigger rooms in prison. We spent our day adjusting to the time change and then going out at night to see Galway. Lucky for me the sun doesn't set till 10 pm. So far this place couldn't be any more perfect. We took a quick walk to the fishing village of Claddagh, the birthplace of the Irish engagement ring, the claddagh ring. At the bank we found a small skull and cross bones where it is said that the former mayor of Galway hung his son in the ultimate stance of City before Family, after his son killed the prince of Spain after he made eyes with his wife. We found Galway's best fish n' chips, watched street performers, and then came upon Saint Patricks church in the heart of downtown Galway.
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; I went on Friday and he went early Saturday morning (She
didn't want to work on both of our energies at once...)
It was really interesting. My mother was first introduced to Sandra Noble when she accidentally wound up at a psychic fair. She had gone with her Lyme organization after hearing it was more of a health fair. She liked meeting Sandra and wanted us to do the same. When I went on Friday she told me that I should be working with children and that I would live a simple but happy life. At first I was skeptical of her prophecies but when she asked me if I had any questions I was really blown away. I opened my mouth to ask and she said my exact question verbatim without any previous discussion in that topic area.
When Ian went the next day a sampling of what he heard was that he was on the track to a desk job but would find the most success and happiness in a later job working with water preservation. She also told him that he would eventually build his own environmentally friendly home. Overall, I would say she was able to tell us some things about our futures that reflected out personalities without ever talking to us and getting to know more about us. It was fun and I would definitely pay her another visit if I had a question on my mind.
After Ian's visit we drove with my parents to Arthur Avenue, a section of the Bronx. This area is like a lesser- known Little Italy. We had delicious food at a family- style restaurant and saw some very authentic looking shops. I couldn't go into the pork shop- the head- level hanging meat and general smell were a bit overwhelming.

Myself with the store cat of a coffee accessory shop

Ian with the store cat- who wasn't trying to escape as much as it looks in this picture! One of the many pastry and bread shops

A delicacy we weren't brave enough to try!

On Sunday we went to the Beardsley Zoo. While the San Diego Zoo tops this one on animals and size this Zoo wins on character. The space between exhibits is purposely overgrown and wild looking. Between the foliage and the old stone buildings you feel like you are at some eccentric old man's estate viewing the animals he caught on his adventures. My favorite were the prairie dogs while Ian seemed to get pretty attached to some tiny orange monkeys. We were at the Zoo to honor a Lyme doctor's 80th Birthday- Dr. Jones. He is a pediatric Lyme physician and it doubled as a fundraiser for his legal fees. Ian got the quick guide to all the Lyme- treating doctors in the area, as they were there as guests, as well as the chance to hear multiple families experiences. He was a good sport and even helped me move the speakers around for the event.

My little prairie dogs hanging with their homies

Ian and I at the rainforest section of the zoo

Ian's favorite orange monkeys

- Katy

Mystic Seaport

A 2 hour drive from Ridgefield landed Katy, Katy's mom (Jennifer), and I in Mystic, CT. Home of the famous Mystic Pizza and a historical seaport. We entered the seaport and were immediately taken back by a huge wooden whaling ship called the J.P. Morgan. This was the oldest wooden whaling boat in the world.

The boat has been dry-docked for a historical restoration project ranging in the millions of dollars. in the mid-nineteenth century this ship was taking on 2-3 year voyages to gather as much blubber for whale oil as possible. 200 years later the smell of that whale oil still overpowers the deck of the ship. We learned that ship hands were forced to crawl around on hand and knee, due to the amount of whale oil that coated the floors, to get around the ship.

Our tour continued further as we traveled past the bustling ship lumber yards, bearded men, and sea birds. We saw exhibits that highlighted the original lifeguards that guarded the shores and would use cannon power to save the ships and their sailors after they had run aground on the surrounding rocks. We saw the history of sea life and how it has modernized throughout time. From tall ships to light houses, from rope making to blacksmiths, from clamming to boat restoration, Mystic had it all.

- Ian

We're Off!!

The time has flown by, our bags are packed, tickets in hand, and we are ready to start our journey. There was no looking back. The first leg of the trip brings us to Katy's hometown, Ridgefield, CT. Both of Katy's parents, Tim and Jennifer, have given us a warm welcome and have opened their home to us. I had the rare chance to meet Finn when we first arrived as she bolted around the house upon our arrival in a dance deemed "The Torpedo." On our first day Katy and I and Finn toured the main strip in the city and ended at the dog park.

- Ian

Ireland, here we come!!

So, Ian and I did it...
